During January 1996 the remains of 100 unknown former residents of the County Poorhouse who died during the 1800s were removed from their unmarked burial site at the former Van Duyn Home & Hospital and reinterred in Loomis Hill Cemetery.
A brief memorial service was conducted at Loomis Hill Cemetery on Thursday, June 27, 1996 at 10:00 AM to acknowledge and pay respects to these individuals. Loomis Hill Cemetery is located on Howlett Hill Road, adjacent to the Veteran's Cemetery, in the Town of Onondaga.
The Reverend Milton Vahey and Monsignor Robert Davern, Chaplains of the Van Duyn Home & Hospital, lead the memorial service, which included remarks by Nicholas J. Pirro, County Executive and Mrs. Jane Tracy, Town of Onondaga Historian.
It should be noted that the removal and reinterment of the remains was performed by Butler-Badman Funeral Home, Inc. with the assistance of Ira D. Conklin & Sons, Inc. and the staff of the County Parks Department.
Original burial site was unmarked grave on Poor House Knoll, 300-400 ft. behind existing power house.
