Mary Jane Goodwin was the wife of Ephriam Duke Eslinger. She died December 31, 1871, at age 44 years, 2 months, 7 days. She was the mother of his six children.
NOTE: The front of the headstone, with the bible on the top, is inscribed for the mother of Hannah and William:
MARY JANE
WIFE OF
E.D. ESLINGER
DIED
DEC. 31, 1871
AGED
44Y. 2M. 7D.
The side of the ESLINGER family headstone is inscribed with two of the young children of Mary Jane and Ephriam Duke Eslinger. First is Hannah F. Eslinger and under that William A. Eslinger.
NOTE: Hannah died August 5, 1862, age 4 y 9 m 22 d, then only two months later on September 7, 1862, her younger brother, William, died age 2 y 3 m 24 d.
NOTE: The top half of the stone is blank and was likely intended for Mary Jane's husband, Ephriam Duke Eslinger. However, Ephriam remarried, then at the time of his death 18 years later, he was buried beside his second wife, Nancy F. Gates.
Her widowed husband Ephriam Duke remarried. He and Nancy Francis Gates were married on January 19, 1873, one year, nineteen days after the death of his wife, Mary Jane Goodwin. Of course Nancy would become the step-mother of Ephriam's and Mary Jane's children.
Nancy Frances Gates was my paternal third great aunt. The information about being widowed with six children is from my copy of the handwritten Family Tree of Nancy's father, Oliver Uriah Gates. CG Gateways
