Roy S. Connor Jan. 9, 1922-Dec. 21, 2006

Roy S. Connor, 84, of Monroe died at 8 p.m. Thursday at Mercy Memorial Nursing Center.

Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the Monroe location of Bennet-Prochnow Funeral Home. He will lie in state from noon until services at 1 p.m. Saturday at Monroe Missionary Baptist Church. The Rev. Roy Southerland will officiate. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park, LaSalle.

Born Jan. 9, 1922, in Harrogate, Tenn., he was the son of Thomas and Allie (Dixon) Connor. He married Opal I. Owens Nov. 7, 1977, at Monroe Missonary Baptist Church.

He graduated from Forge Ridge High School in Tennessee in 1941.

He served in Army's Company C, 54th Armored Infantry Battalion,the during World War II in Europe. He received a Silver Star, Bronze Star, five battle stars and a Purple Heart.

He retired in 1983 from Consumer Powers' J.R. Whiting Plant in Erie, where he had worked for 30 years, including 21 years as a turbine operator.

He was a member of Monroe Missonary Bapitst Church, where he taught Sunday School.

He was a life member of the former Floral City Chapter 79, Disabled American Veterans.

He was also a life member of the Monroe Lodge 27, Free & Accepted Masons.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Surviving are a son, Roger (Mary) of Monroe; two brothers, Doyle (Ann) of Harrogate, Tenn., and Thomas (Jewel) of Monroe; a sister, Marcilla (Farris) Giles of Harrogate; three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.
