DEATH OF MOTHER BURKHOLDER

The sad tidings came to Mr. Emmet Carpenter yesterday of the death of Mrs. H. Burkholder, who expired Tuesday night at the residence of Governor Carpenter, in Des Moines. She has been a sufferer for many months, and her death was not unexpected, though it falls with the harsh and terrible weight with which death always comes to family and friends. Mrs. Burkholder was among the earliest settlers of Fort Dodge, and with noble heart and Christian grace she bravely bore all the discomforts and sacrifices of pioneer life, rearing a large family and surrounding herself with a large circle of warm and loving friends. Several times death has come to her household, and now of her children three only remain, Mrs. Governor Carpenter and Arthur and Walter, all of whom were with her in her last hours. About a year ago Mr. and Mrs. Burkholder took up their residence with Mrs. Carpenter in Des Moines, where they have lived ever since. Gov. Carpenter has telegraphed that they will bring Mrs. Burkholder home for burial, and will reach Fort Dodge tomorrow, Friday, at 2 o’clock P. M., going immediately from the train to the Episcopal church, where the services will be held. Mrs. Burkholder was a member of the Episcopal church, and a woman of the most noble Christian virtues. She was 65 years at the time of her death. With husband, daughter and sons there will be deep and sorrowful sympathy.
