Recovered Body of Boy Drowned at Amos Wharf

Daniel Besant Aged 13, son of Mr. and Mrs. Killian Besant, of Hainesport, was drowned in the Rancocas creek, at Amos Wharf, at about three o' clock yesterday afternoon. Discovery of the drowning was not made until nearly seven o' clock last evening, when two Polish lads aged about 10 years , who had accompanied Daniel to the wharf, told of the accident.

They said that Besant, while in deep water, suddenly called for help and then sank out of sight. Much frightened, the Polish boys, gathering Besant's clothes, fled and were afraid to report the drowning. They took the boy's clothes and placed them on the porch of his home, where the apparel was not noticed for some time.

Mrs. Besant, alarmed that her son did not return home, started a search. She found the clothes and then asked assistance of neighbors to locate the boy. Shortly before seven o'clock the Polish boys told of the drowning.

Trooper O'Rourke and Detective Carabine were summoned to assist in the search. Lieutenant of Police Goldy of Mount Holly, also went to the scene and aided in hunting for the body.

Thomas L. Quigley, of Mount Holly, got grappling irons and with others worked nearly all night in dragging the creek for the body, without success. The search was continued this morning, and the body was recovered shortly before noon.

The boy's father, who is employed in Camden by the Pennsylvania railroad returned only about a week ago from Buffalo, where he attended the funeral of his brother, also a victim of drowning.
