Cpl Edward Harding Ballard, As a member of the Army Selective Service and a Draftee, CPL Ballard served our country until March 11th, 1967 in Long An, South Vietnam. He was 20 years old and was married. It was reported that Edward died from multiple fragmentation wounds from a a landmine. His body was recovered. CPL Ballard is on panel 16E, line 056 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for less than a year.
In my travels I passed the North Carolina Viet Nam Memorial. I know that you are a native of NC. I just wanted to tell you that your name is on a brick on their memorial. I suppose that you are watching us. What a mess. Your loss is still sad to me. Its a sadness that's hard to explain. But it is the result of war. Like A Big Brother: Eddie was more than just a friend he was like my big brother. I remember all the summers of fun we had together, he would ride me on his shoulders, spin me round and round and I would just laugh,he took care of all of us little ones when he was left in charge. He was very talented should have been an actor,would sing, dance and entertain us. We would talk, laugh and play. He was so wonderful with kids. A kind,loving individual,well thought of by all who knew him. The girls were crazy over him,a very handsome young man. He never got to see his son, but his son should be proud of his Dad. I was your Replacement: I never knew you, but was only told your name. I was the first replacement to 2nd squad, 2nd platoon, B company, 3/39 Infantry, 9th Infantry Division. I arrived after You and PFC Plumb were killed in action. We also lost SP4 Clark because he was wounded. I was not received by the squad very well at first. They were still grieving the loss of you and your buddies. Time healed their wounds, and it was not long before I became the old man of the squad. We lost a lot. I made it until 8 November 1967. I was wounded for my third time, and 8 November was my last day in the field. I never knew you, but I think of all of those who served in our squad often. He served with Charlie Company, 3rd Battalion, 39th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, "Old Reliables", USARV.
He was awarded The Combat Infantryman's Badge(CIB), The Bronze Star Medal, The Purple Heart Medal for his combat related wounds, the Vietnam Service Medal, The Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, The National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
