John J. Truax, proprietor of the St. Bernard hotel, at Friscoville avenue and North Peters street, died at 10 o'clock yesterday morning while seated in his dining room. He was born in New York sixty-five years ago, and lived the greater part of his life in Davenport, Ia. He moved to St. Bernard about eight years ago, when ground for the construction of the Chalmette slip was broken, and operated a hotel at the slip for several years. About tow years ago Mr. Truax suffered a paralytic stroke. Several weeks ago his condition grew serious, and he was unable to leave the house. He was a hard working and industrious citizen and is survived by his wife, who was formerly a Miss Mary Van Buskirk, and one son, William F. Truax. The funeral of John J. Truax was held from his late residence, Friscoville avenue and North Peters street, at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon, and was largely attended. Interment was in the St. Vincent de Paul Cemetery in New Orleans. Many friends called at the home of mourning yesterday. Mr. Truax was the architect and builder of his own hotel, the St. Bernard, and up to the time he was taken seriously ill manifested much energy and activity for a man of his age.
