Captain Douglas Hebb Ford, a Chesapeake Bay and Chesapeake and Delaware Canal Pilot for nearly half a century was born in Baltimore on 1st Oct 1898 to Captain Edwin Henry Ford (1852-1915) and Mary Virginia Hebb (1871-1904) daughter of Captain John Stephen Hebb (1830-1913), a founding member and fourth president of the Association of Maryland Pilots and Sarah C. Thomas (1834-1875). Sarah C. Thomas was the daughter of Captain William B. Thomas also a founding member of the Association of Maryland Pilots and his wife Susan Deale. Susan Deale was the daughter of Christian Deale and Hannah Stiles.

Captain Ford began his apprenticeship in 1916 with the Association of Maryland Pilots. He served as first and second vice-president of the Association for a period of time. During the Second World War he served in the Coast Guard reaching the rank of Commander. He retired from active piloting in 1962.
