Frances Ethelyn Collier was the daughter of Sylvanus "Sill" Collier and Sarah Frances Stewart.
When Frances Ethelyn Collier was born on December 1, 1894, in Tyler, Texas, her father, Sylvanus Edward, was 50 and her mother, Sarah Frances, was 41. Her father was known to most as Sill and was a carpenter, her mother stayed at home to take care of the house and the children. Fannie as she was called had four brothers and five sisters or at least these are the ones that are found either in documents or family trees. there has been nothing found for her sisters Ida, Lattie and Lottie. Here are the names of supposed siblings Nannie, Ida, George Jefferson, Sarah Lou, who they called Sallie, Sylvanus Edward, Lattie, Van Stewart, John Wesley and Lottie.
In the Sabine, Texas 1900 census, Sill was 56, Sarah F was 47, Fannie's sister Nannie E was 28 and the oldest child still at home. Edward was 20, Sallie 18, Lattie 15, Van Stewart was 12, John W was 9 and Fannie was 6. This would be the last census for her mother and brother Van Stewart to be counted in as Mom would died December 6, 1901 and her brother Van Stewart would die October 13, 1907.
In 1910 Sill and 3 of the children are living in Tyler, Texas where he is 65 and still carpentering, son John Wesley now 18 is a laborer doing odd jobs, daughter Sallie is 26 and now the lady of the house with her sister Fannie's help who is now 15. Lottie who was supposedly younger than Fannie is not living with them, she would be about 11, did she pass away?
1920 comes around with the family still living in the same place. Sill is now 75 years of age. He is a brick mason and now there are two sons living at home, George Jefferson 43, who is a barber, has moved back home as he wasn't living there in 1910, he was a boarder in a local boarding home and John Wesley 27, who is a laborer on an old field are the men of the house, Sallie L 35 is still the oldest female at home and now Frannie is 24 and teaching music.
In 1929 the children lost their father so in 1930 George Jefferson now 55 had stepped up as the head of the house, Sarah Lou "Sallie" and her husband of 3 years, Will H. Charlton 65 were living with George. Fannie now 40 was also living there. The men of the house are the bread winners, the women are the ones to keep the home in order as they have no occupations listed. George is a house painter and his brother-in-law, Will H Charlton works on a farm but it is not theirs as they do not live on a farm.
In 1940 three siblings live in Tyler, Texas east of Woodville on Turkey Creek. George is still head of the house, barbering and now 65 years old. Fannie is listed as Ethelyn for the first time and now is 46, according to the information on the census report Fannie hasn't worked any in 1939 or 1940, there has been only one census where she had an occupation listed and that was in 1920 when at the age of 24 she was teaching music. It didn't specify whether she was doing so in a public place or in her home. Now Sallie Lou 57 who was in 1930 married to Will H Charlton and both living with George and Fannie is now listed as single and has taken back her Collier name in the report.
All reports found for Frances Ethelyn "Fannie" Collier show that she is single, right down to the last census in 1940 that are accessible to the public at this time except one. In the Texas Death Index she is listed as married. This could be an error but since her sister Sarah Lou was indeed married and living with her brother George and her husband in the 1930 census and then in 1940 she is living alone and listed as single in the house with her brother George and her sister Frances E. it seems that these Collier women might take back their maiden names when their husband dies or they divorce. So she might very well have been married. There has been no death cert found for her either. It has been easy to find the male Collier death certs but not so easy to find the females. Maybe this is because their death certs might be in their married names?
Frances died on March 23, 1969, in Cherokee, Texas, at the age of 74, and was buried in Colmesneil, Texas. Her grave marker says Frances Ethelyn Collier...
