Don served in the army right after World War II. He began working as a communications specialist at Camp Douglas (Volk Field), Wisconsin in 1950. He was a member first of the United States Army National Guard and then switched to the Air National Guard in 1956, where he rose to the rank of Master Sargent. He retired in 1986.
