John Edward Akers passed away from this life on October 17, 2016.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 19th, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at the Corum Baptist Church with John Johnson officiating. Interment will follow at Fairlawn Cemetery, under the direction of Comanche Funeral Home. Visitation will be Tuesday 10:00-7:00, with the family receiving friends from 6:00-7:00.

John was born October 25, 1929 to J.W. "Bill" and Clista Mae Akers. He is preceded in death by his parents, his two brothers, Roy Akers and Estes J. "Sonny" Akers and his sister, Evelyn Mae "Miss" Woods.

John married Billie Jean Smith on January 19, 1953. He is survived by his wife, Billie; his two daughters, Debbie Cottrell of Temple, TX and Connie Wall and husband Michael of Tuttle, OK; two grandchildren, Baron Cottrell and wife Nikki and Jonathan Weekley and wife Nikki and three great grandchildren, Rhett Cottrell, Evan Weekley and Avery Weekley. He is also survived by nieces and nephews two of whom live in the Comanche area; Deanna Brooks and husband Kenny and Scott Smith and wife Mindy.

John loved life, enjoyed talking and never met a stranger. He was drafted in the U.S. Army in 1953 and served two years at Ft. Hood, TX. Through the years, John worked for Comanche Livestock Auction, Halliburton Oil Company and was a self-employed farmer, cattle rancher and livestock hauler. John and Billie moved to Monahans, TX for a short period during the time John worked for Halliburton Oil Company. Other than his time in the Army and in Monahans, John and Billie made their home in the Comanche area.

John's hobby throughout his life was working with horses and during his earlier years, he excelled at roping. He continued to enjoy watching rodeos and bull riding throughout his life.
