Born in Zanesville, Ohio in 1893, John was a third generation German whose grandfather came from Spesbach, Germany to Ohio in 1854 with several siblings.

After 1903, his father Charles, who worked for Proctor and Gamble, moved the family to Cincinnati, Kansas City, and finally Richmond, in Staten Island NY. John completed 8th grade in Kansas City in 1907 before entering the work force as a soap packer and foreman for Proctor and Gamble in NY.

In 1917 he was drafted into the army during WWI. He rose to a command of second lieutenant before being honorably discharged at the end of 1918. He was enrolled in the Officer's Reserve Corp 1923-1928.

John worked for P&G until 1921, when he moved to NJ with his brother Frank. He worked from 1921-1950 for Union County Buick, except during WWII (1942-1947) when he worked at an elastic stop nut factory in Elizabeth, NJ (to help the war effort).

John married Josephine Pfaff of Elizabeth, NJ in 1928, who bore him two children, John Michael Jr in 1929, and Charles in 1936. John lived and worked in Union County, NJ as a car salesman until his sudden death in 1950.
