Roman Catholic Cardinal. A member of the Order of the Friars Minor Conventuals, Bagnacavallo born Antonio Francesco Orioli professed his vows in Bologna on May 6, 1793, being ordained to the priesthood upon concluding his studies at the named city, as well as in Parma and Rome at Saint Bonaventure College. Lecturing theology at the latter and successively in France, back in Italy he resumed his teaching career at the same college, serving in the meantime as definitor general of his Order and consultor of the Sacred Congregation of the Index. Examiner of the Roman Clergy and for the promotion to academic chairs, he was elected vicar general of his Order on September 4, 1832. Elected bishop of the diocese of Orvieto, he received his episcopal consecration on May 1, 1833 at the basilica of Ss. XII Apostoli in Rome from Cardinal Giacinto Placido Zurla OSB. Cam., with Pope Gregory XVI later creating him cardinal priest in the consistory of February 12, 1838 with the title of Santa Maria sopra Minerva. Resigning the pastoral government of the diocese on December 18, 1841, Pope Pius IX named him prefect of the Sacred Congregation of Bishops and Regulars on May 2, 1847, serving furthermore as Secretary of State 'ad interim' between May 5 and June 4, 1848. Opting for the title of Ss. XII Apostoli on September 30, 1850, Cardinal Orioli passed away in Rome and was buried in his title in the presence of the named Pontiff, Pius IX.
