Nathan Wayman Hicks, son of the late James Lewis Hicks and Betty Elizabeth Seaberry Hicks, was born on December 19, 1940 in Bunnlevel, North Carolina. He was one of thirteen children. Wayne departed this life at 2:43 am on Saturday, November 18, 2006 after a long battle with Dementia caused by multiple strokes.

Wayne moved to Baltimore, Maryland when he was 16 years old. In later years, he met and married the former Virginia Dickey on September 25, 1969. From that union two children were born, Stacey and Horatio.

Wayne was a "jack-of-all-trades". He operated a gas station, had a successful recycling business, and worked as an auto mechanic. No car problem was too complicated for him to solve and he had faithful customers to prove it. He believed in working hard until his health began to fail him. In 1978, he joined Prayer Mission Church of God in Christ under the leadership of Elder Jesse Fliggins, Sr.

Wayne loved spending time with his family and friends talking about cars, racing, movies, and the good old days. He had a very kind heart and would do anything to help his family and friends. His generosity knew no bounds, he would help anyone in need. I've heard some of his friends say he would literally "give you the shirt off of his back". He especially loved "spoiling" his grandchildren whom he adored so much. He was very proud to be a "grandpa". His love for his children and grandchildren is timeless and will always be treasured.

His passion was auto racing and for a time, he actually raced on the circuits at Capitol Raceway and 75-80 Dragway and has won numerous awards and titles. His favorite movies were old westerns and he watched them as much as he could. He was loved by everyone because he was simply "Wayne". He never tried to be something that he wasn't. He loved to make friends everywhere he went. The best life lesson that he taught me was to always be myself. People would love me for who I was. My dad (as always) was right.

He leaves to mourn: his wife of 37 years, Virginia D. Hicks; one daughter, Stacey L. Hicks; one son, Horatio L. Hicks; two grandchildren; Brandon L. Greene and Aaliyah L. Chambers; four brothers, Gus A. Hicks, Bernie Hicks, Jimmy Hicks, and Anthony D. Hicks; five sisters, Rosa Hemingway, Madie Smith, Mattie Williams, Doris Lucas, and Mabel M. Wilson; seven sisters-in-law, Mary Hicks, Annette Hicks, Edna Hicks, Shirley Hicks, Bernadette Hicks, Phyllis Hicks, and Betty Wilson; five brothers-in-law, David Hemingway, George Williams, Leon Lucas, Henry Wilson, James Wilson and Odell McFadden; two godchildren, Brian Brown and Latonya Hicks; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends. Wayne was preceded in death by his sister, the late Lottie Buie and his two brothers, the late James Hicks and the late Clarence Hicks.
