From the Austin Daily Herald; Austin, Mower Co., MN; Tuesday, May 8, 1934; p.7, col.5:

Carrie Gullikson was born on a farm near Adams, Minnesota on April 17, 1861. Here she spent her girlhood days. At the age of about eighteen she went to Calmar, Iowa where she worked for a time returning to Adams in 1885. On August 2 of the same year she was united in marriage to Ole E. Ulven.

After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Ulven moved to North Dakota where they lived until 1892 when they returned to Adams which was their home until September 1926, when they went to Sioux Falls, S. Dakota. Here Mr. Ulven passed away last October 12.

In August 1922 (sic), Mrs. Ulven suffered a stroke from which she never recovered, but as time went on she gradually became weaker and more helpless and just a year ago was taken to the Sioux Valley hospital at Sioux Falls, S. Dak., but while at the hospital she often asked to be taken home or to one of her own. This wish was fulfilled as just a week ago she was taken to the home of her daughter, Mrs. Tucker, at Minneapolis, where she slept peacefully away. Death came as a great relief to her long suffering.

She leaves to mourn her passing five sons and two daughters, Edward and George of Sioux Falls, S. Dak., Carmie of Pacific Palisades, Calif., Fred of Rose Creek, Emer and Irene (Mrs. Lloyd Uglum) of Adams and Alice (Mrs. Carl Tucker) of Minneapolis, also eleven grandchildren.

She was a typical mother, the kind that children can hardly appreciate until after she is gone. Though failing in health and strength for many years her thoughts were constantly with her children for whom she valiantly struggled to bring them to manhood and womanhood, and as she returned to the land of shadows the lesson sinks deep into their hearts.

Funeral services were held at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lloyd Uglum, and from the Little Cedar Church in Adams at 2 p.m., Sunday. Rev. A. Brevick officiating, assisted by Rev. Myhre of Osage, Iowa. Two duets were sung by Mrs. Anderson and Mrs. Slindee, "Little Mother of Mine" and "In the Sweet By and By." Mrs. Myhre also sang a solo. Five sons and one grandson were pallbearers. Burial was in Little Cedar Cemetery west of Adams.
