In Memoriam
For the Patriot
Thomas Allen Benedict, second son of Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Benedict, was born at Fulton, April 29, 1887. Until the completion of his secondary schoolwork, he resided in the place of his birth.
In September, 1906, Allen entered Amherst college with the intention of preparing himself for a professional career. he had always son and eager interest in medicine and his light and sure fingers gave promise of success in the field of surgery, also. After a four-year course, Allen expected to enter, in 1910, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New York, but he was obligated to leave Amherst during his sophomore years to undergo several operation on his eyes.
As he found his physical condition would not permit his returning to Amherst in some time, and as he had completed all the requirements for entrance to his medical college, he matriculated there in 1908, hoping to enter in the fall. But he was not destined to carry out these plans.
Following the numerous operations to which he was obligated to submit, his health broke down. Allen appreciated the fact that for many years he would not be able to carry out his long-cherished desires, and he put them aside temporarily to take up the fight of his life.
In 1912 he went to a sanatorium in Silver City, N.M. to see a more congenial climate. During the next four years his condition declined rather than improved, and in the early summer of 1915 he went to Evansville, ind. to be operated on by a noted physician. The operation was only partially successful, and he gradually grew weaker union on March 7, 1916, he quietly passed away in his 29th year.
The funeral services were held at Fulton, march 10th; Allen's former pastor and friend, Rev. W. L. Sawtelle, assisted by Dr. Robertson officiated. The bearers were six of his boyhood associates.
