James was born October 11, 1934 in Oshkosh to Ralph C. and Beulah (Bourquin) Dayley. He came from a large family of nine children. James was united in marriage with Lela M. Campbell on May 19, 1967 in Bridgeport. After Lela’s passing in 2010, James and Ruth Glassmaker of Bridgeport became friends and constant companions until his passing. James received his education in Garden County. He served in the U.S. Army from 1956 – 1958. He worked as a custom harvester, farmer, construction business owner, trailer shop supervisor and trucking company owner and driver. James will be greatly missed by his family and his many, many friends.
He enjoyed reading, watching football, and traveling, especially to Arizona for the winter.
Survivors include his very, very special friend, Ruth Glassmaker of Bridgeport; three children, Shirley (Charles) Cannon of Mitchell, Merlin Campbell of Mitchell and Sherry (Darrel) Orr of Earlville, Iowa; three sisters, Leola Smith and Luella Finsen of Colorado and Frieda Friday of South Carolina; and one brother, Ivan Dayley of South Dakota. He has inherited many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren and has numerous nieces and nephews.
James was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lela; three sisters; and one brother.
