Germantown, TN - Joan Spector died Monday, November 21, 2016 at Methodist Hospital in Germantown. She was 71 years old. The daughter of the late Louis and Vera Millen, Joan was born and raised in Johnson City, TN. She graduated from Science Hill High School and attended the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, where she met and married Howard Spector. They moved to Memphis where they raised their family, and were 5 weeks away from celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. A devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, Joan delighted in her family and friends. In years past, she enjoyed volunteering for organizations which held special meaning to her, and was most proud of being a three-time president of the Baron Hirsch Ladies Auxiliary, during which time she received the Louis Turetsky Chesed (loving-kindness) Award in recognition of her achievement and dedication to in the community. Joan was a talented calligrapher and watercolor artist, an avid reader, and a puzzle and game enthusiast. All who knew Joan loved her sense of humor, which she kept until the end. No matter how complicated her multiple illnesses became, she often quipped, "Well, at least I have my health!" She took enormous pleasure and pride in her children, Stephanie and Joel Sklar of Memphis, and Frannie Spector of Atlanta, and her grandchildren, Drew and Benjamin Sklar, whom she unconditionally loved. She also leaves her sisters Andrea (Howard) Rich of Philadelphia, PA, Elaine Millen of Charlotte, NC, sister-in-law Barbara Angel of Bainbridge Island, WA, nieces and nephews, Roxanne Angel, Claire Angel and Lance Odermat, Jacob and Kristi Angel, Dan and Maureen Rich, Joe Rich, and many beloved great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins. Services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, November 23 at the Sam Abraham Chapel in Baron Hirsch Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to Baron Hirsch Synagogue or to a charity of the donor's choice.
