The Muskogee, Oklahoma “Our Brother in Red”
It was an awful accident that befell Mr. E. F. Gilbert, who was night switchman to the yard engine at this place. About 2 o’clock Thursday morning as he was assisting in the make-up of a freight train he went on top of one of the boxes to set the brake of the moving car. It is not known whether he slipped on the frozen roof or whether in the darkness he missed the brake and walked off. Any way he fell between the two moving cars, the wheels of one passing over his left thigh, which was terribly crushed. He was otherwise bruised by the fall. Drs. Fite and Blakemore amputated the limb. He died at 10 o’clock the same day. He was buried in the new cemetery on Sunday, a large procession of people accompanying his remains to their last resting place.
