Darwin W. Mead

Oswego lost a well-known and highly respected businessman yesterday in the death of Darwin W. Mead of the Mead Drug store. Mr. Mead had been seriously ill about seven years ago and had never fully recovered. About three weeks ago he was again taken ill and gradually grew weaker until the end came yesterday. Death was due to a complication of diseases. While his death was not unexpected, it nevertheless came as a shock to his family and friends. In his death the city has suffered a great loss, and the sympathy of the people goes out to his bereaved family.

Mr. Mead was born in Oswego in 1856, and was the son of D. M. Mead, who established the Mead Drug Store here, one of the oldest business houses in the city. In his early years Mr. Mead was in the railroad business but only for a short time, he then went into the Drug Store and has been there ever since. In his many years of business, he became well known to all the people of the city and had a very large circleof friends and acquaintances. He had been a member of the Fortnightly Club for many years and was also a member of the Elks, which organization will take charge of the funeral services. The funeral will beheld at the home of his aunt, Mrs. John Oliphant, No. 90 West Sixth street.

Mr. Mead had a beautiful home in the village of Watkins in the Southern part of the State and he dividedhis time between that place and Oswego. He is survived by his wife, one son, Darwin W. Mead, two sisters, Mrs. E. M. Lockwood of Philadelphia, and Miss Mary Mead of Cooperstown, and his mother, Mrs. Martha M. Mead.
