Obituary

Conrad Johnson was born in Algotsboda, Kronobergs län, Sweden, January 30, 1852, and passed this life at his home in Dayton, May 4, 1921, aged 69 years, 3 months, 4 days. He spent his boyhood at the place of his birth, and emigrated to America in 1873, settling at St. Charles, Illinois, where he was united in marriage, December 14, 1878, to Miss Jennie Gustafson, who preceded him to the Land Beyond in December, 1896. Two daughters were born of their union, Alice and Helen. The latter passed away in June, 1896, six months before her mother joined her in the Spirit Land. Mr. Johnson came with his family to Dayton in 1894, and lived among us until death called him. He was again married, November 20, 1900, to Mrs. Hannah L. Nelson, who, together with the surviving daughter, Mrs. G. A. Swanstrom, two grandchildren, Gerald and Bliss Swanstrom, two stepdaughters, Florence and Nellie Nelson, three brothers, Charles Johnson of Elgin, Illinois, Peter Johnson of Burnside Township, north of Dayton, and Axel Johnson of Spencer, Iowa, three sisters, Mrs. Andrew Johnson, northeast of town, Mrs. John Schwendemann of Forest Grove, Oregon, and Miss Hilda Johnson of Denver, Colorado, survives him. Mr. Johnson has been a member of the Swedish Lutheran Church of this place since coming to Dayton, and for fifteen years has served on its board of trustees, giving an active service to the work of the Master. He has always taken an interest in his community, serving for a time on the town council, and looking ever to the good of the town and its territory. He lived an upright, manly life, cordial in his relations to his friends and associates, loving in his family life as a husband and father, and highly respected among neighbors and companions. His funeral was held Friday afternoon from the Lutheran church, his pastor, Rev. Ekeberg, conducting the services, and his remains were laid to rest in Dayton cemetery. A host of friends of the family sympathize with them in their hour of bereavement.
