The Barber monument is in poor condition.

Despite being the last carved on the plinth, Calvin's side (north facing) is practically illegible. Dates used are from family records.

Twin brother of John Calvin Barber, the two were the eighth & ninth children (out of 14) born to Olive Benson & Abijah Barber. (His father had two more girls from his second wife Clarissa née Crandall for a total of 16).

Calvin grew up in Fabius, NY & at the age of 27 he set off west in 1844, arriving in Kane County, Illinois on May 24th. His older brother James had settled in Ohio but Calvin followed in the footsteps of his brothers Numan & Eli who had arrived in Kane County 5 or 6 years earlier. Calvin's twin, John C, settled not too far away in Kendall Co., IL & his sister Jane also made the move to Illinois. Jane married in Kane Co. to Willis S Garrison & the couple lived in Chicago, though her fate is unknown. (Jane's daughter Eva, who died at two years old, is buried here at Garfield).

Calvin was a farmer & purchased land in Blackberry Township. He married Maria Louisa Garfield on May 19th, 1852, Kane Co., IL & the couple settled on their farm off Harley Road just south of (now) Rt. 38, not too far from her parents. The couple had fibe children together: Carroll A, Robert Jefferson, Elsie Jane, John Calvin (named after Calvin's twin) & Alice May.

1863 saw the death of his wife & two months later that of his son Robert who was not quite six years old. Baby Alice was but a year old & Calvin quickly remarried. (There is no record but the 1865 census indicates he was married by then). Calvin married Jane née Fox Sinton, widow of Thomas Emlyn Sinton & the mother of Manvil Emlyn Sinton. Jane was also born in Fabius & the couple probably knew each other growing up. (There were numerous Fox families in Fabius at that time but no records have been found to indicate to which family Jane belonged).

Calvin & Jane had one child of their own: daughter Jessie F, who died at 11 years of age. Jessie is buried near to Calvin's grave (he's buried with his wife & their children Robert & Elsie Jane). Jane née Fox Sinton Barber is buried next to her son Manvil Sinton. (Her first husband is buried back in New York).

Note: The DOB on Find A Grave (August 28th) for John Calvin Barber, twin to Calvin C, differs from April 21st, but as no photo is included on his memorial & since Calvin's inscription is nigh impossible to read I've used the dates from family sources for Calvin's DOB.
