Per Army of the Confederate States, Rebel Archives: William N. Bird enlisted March 21, 1862 at Rutherford County, NC by Capt. James W. Kilpatrick, 56th Regiment NC Infantry, Rutherford Rifles. By September 1862, he is noted being in hospital in Goldsboro, later transferred to one in Raleigh, NC. He was written a Certificate of Disability for Discharge December 1, 1862 in Raleigh, NC. Due to "atrophy of leg", (hit in a battle in July?) he was deemed "incapable of performing soldier's duty of any kind". He returned to his home Mockingbird Farm in Greene County. My grandfather Arel W. Bird, his brother Roy Harrison Bird and cousin Carl Jones as children, many times enjoyed sitting at Grandpa William Bird's knees, listening to his stories. _Suzan Bird Way
