Leonard was born aboard a ship on the Atlantic Ocean to German immigrant parents. He married Mary Ann Kaser on June 27, 1872, with whom he had eight children: Albert, Amanda, Hiram, twins Edward and Elsworth, Lydia, Della and Charley. The twins' names are given as Adam and Amon in the birth records. Leonard worked as a farmer, carpenter and shoemaker in the Beck's Mills area.
