He graduated Yale in 1823, attended the University of Pennsylvania, and received his medical degree from the University of Maryland in 1826. After studying in Europe, he settled in Richmond, where he had a large practice. He was president of the Medical society of Virginia, and was one of the founders of the American medical association. Married Jane Randolph Higginbotham McMurdo on 11/13/1839 at the residence of Mr. David Higginbotham, in Albemarle county, by the Rev. R. K. Meade.
