Mamie was the biological daughter of John Henry Barry and Maggie May Younger. In 1888, her parents were going through an acrimonious divorce. Her mother was deemed unfit due to drunkenness. Mamie was brought to New Orleans to stay with her grandparents: Tom & Mary Barry. Tom was a river boat engineer and often gone while working. Unfortunately, Mary Oxley Barry died, and Mamie was taken in by the Rooney family. Mamie lived with the Rooneys until she was an adult. She looked on them as her family. It is not known why she did not return to her father in St. Louis; perhaps he was unable to care for her.
