Carmella Ann Blanchard (Mazzitello), 84, was born in St Paul, MN, to Helen and Roscoe Mazzitello, and died peacefully November 27, 2016.
Attending Catholic school in St. Paul, she graduated from St. Joseph’s Academy in 1950.
Not being one to remain idle, Carmella began working for her uncle at Mickey’s Diner, downtown St. Paul in 1944 as a 14 year old, until 1955. While completing training at Globe Business College in 1951, Carmella worked for Brown & Bigelow as a typist and billing clerk. After completing her training, she began full time employment for the MN Highway Department in the Personnel Office until 1955, when she married Robert Blanchard of Osage, MN, in May.
After her marriage, she moved to Trenton, New Jersey, with her husband, working on Maguire Airforce Base as a typist. While in New Jersey, Carmella and Bob began their family with the birth of Stephen (Tiny), in 1956 in Trenton, followed by Christine (1958), Janet (1959), and finally Bruce (1962), in St. Paul, MN. Carmella spent the next 10 years raising her children until moving the entire family back north to Osage, MN, with the purchase of Pine Springs Resort on Straight Lake. Owning and operating the resort allowed Carmella to do many of the things she loved best: cooking, fishing, being outdoors, and talking to new people.
Selling the resort in 1981, Carmella returned to the restaurant work in Park Rapids at Ma’s Diner using one of her best skills, baking after selling the resort in 1981. Wanting to refresh her training and seeking a new challenge, Carmella moved back to St. Paul, MN, and began work with the USDA and as a Reserve Police Officer. After a few years in St. Paul, the USDA brought Carmella back to Osage and Park Rapids, having her travel around the county livestock markets and dairy farms, which she loved until retiring in 1996. Carmella could not sit still for long and helped out at Doc’s in the kitchen and then West Forty for another 3 years. She did manage to find time for travel, the casino, playing with her pugs, and continuing to cook and bake for family gatherings.
Carmella’s long life touched many people and left many great memories. Her kindness, compassion, and generosity are unmatched and the simple pleasures of life allowed her much joy. Her presence, greatly missed by all of her family and the community, will continue through influence on our daily lives.
She is survived by her sister Mary Baldwin, brother Michael (Kim) Mazzitello, children Stephen (Roxanne) Blanchard, Christine (Gene) Spickard, Janet Blanchard, Bruce (Luanne) Blanchard, 14 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren.
Carmella is preceded in death by her parents, Roscoe and Helen Mazzitello, husband Robert Blanchard, brother Lawrence Mazzitello, and grandson Lucas Spickard. Memorial donations may be made in Carmella’s name to the Catholic Charities, VFW, or the local Animal Shelter.
