Written by Chloe HERRIMAN Springston Thomas: When John Herriman, Jr., and family came to Madison County, Arkansas, from Cannon County, Tennessee, Madison County was underdeveloped and had few inhabitants; it was mountainous with many streams of clear water and fine timber. The land had to be cleared of the timber, which was used to build log houses and other outbuildings. John and his wife Polly were walking over their land and came across a pretty level place near their home, Polly told him when she died, she wanted to be buried there. On 13 Oct 1857, she and a baby daughter were laid to rest in that spot, that was the start of the Jackson Creek Cemetery. They came to Arkansas in a wagon train with J T Reeves as wagon master. He was Polly's father.
