Professional Football Player. For five seasons (1954 to 1957 and 1960), he played at the halfback and flanker positions in the National and American Football Leagues with the Baltimore Colts and Los Angeles Chargers. Born Royce Cullen Womble, he attended Mansfield High School in Texas and later played collegiate football at North Texas State University. Following graduation, he served with the United States Navy and after his discharge, he was signed as a non-drafted player by Baltimore. During his rookie season (1954), he produced a career-high 174 rushing yards and 338 receiving yards. After a brief retirement, he joined the Chargers of the newly formed American Football League and had the distinction of being a member of Los Angeles's (later San Diego) inaugural season roster. He contributed to the Chargers' reaching of the AFL Title Game in 1960. He totaled 51 career regular season NFL and AFL games. After leaving football, Womble became a businessman and was involved in running a sporting goods company. He died of complications from Alzheimer's disease.
