Price Elmo Davenport, 80, of Rexburg, Idaho, passed away December 5, 2016, two weeks after being diagnosed with cancer. Price was born to Elmo Ira Davenport and Ivie Mae Price Davenport, on June 10th, 1936, in Sugar City, Idaho.

As a young boy, Price lived in San Diego, California while his father worked in aircraft production at Consolidated Aircraft during World War II. Upon returning to Idaho, Price helped his father in their chicken hatchery in Sugar City until Elmo and a friend opened El-Gene’s Electronics Shop in Rexburg in 1947. Price soon began working at El-Gene’s and learned how to repair radios. Price taught himself to repair televisions, and to eventually build and repair computers. Price finally retired from repairing computers full time two weeks ago, but continued repairing his last few computers from the hospital, and by proxy, from his bed at Carriage Cove with the help of his daughter, Drenda. He finished the work that he began. He became a part owner of El-Gene’s as a young father. Price loved his occupation and taught his family to find joy in work.

Price graduated from Madison High School in Rexburg, and from Ricks College. While in high school, Price learned that he had a gift for singing. He had a beautiful tenor voice, and loved to sing throughout his life. Price participated in the school musicals, and also excelled in his academic classes. Price also enjoyed photography–building his own developing studio in his home--and traveling.

Price served an LDS mission in Melbourne, Australia and Tasmania in 1956-1958. He returned home to marry the love of his life only one month after returning from his mission. Price and Betty Rae Smith Davenport were married in the Idaho Falls Temple on August 21, 1958. They have remained best friends for over 58 years. Together, they built and maintained Davenport Apartments in Rexburg. Thousands have been blessed by their service and kindness over the years. His primary purpose behind owning apartments was to provide a work experience for his children and his grandchildren. Almost all have worked for and with him at some time–creating a treasure trove of memories.

Price was active in the LDS Church. He served in Young Men presidencies, as Elder’s Quorum president, in the High Priest Group leadership, as a member of the Stake Seventies Presidency, in Sunday School presidencies, as 1st Counselor in a bishopric, and as Bishop of the Ricks College 16th Ward. His time as bishop was some of the happiest in his life as he worked and served with his counselors and the youth in his ward. He loved those he served. In later years he served as a clerk in the Rexburg East Stake and in the Rexburg Idaho Temple. Many thanks to the staff at Carriage Cove for their loving kindness towards our father. Price was preceded in death by his parents, son Dalan Davenport, great-granddaughter Abrielle Elizabeth Rowley, and sister Veona Bettencourt.

He is survived by his wife, Betty; children, David (Melanie) Davenport of Rexburg, DelRay (Tamera) Davenport of Saint Anthony, Danett (Rodney) Chugg of Riverton, Utah, Dirk (Jennet) Davenport of Riverton, Utah, Dara (Spence) Gardiner, of Malta, Idaho, Drenda (Mike) Carlton, of Rexburg. Price and Betty have 30 grandchildren and their 16 spouses, and 31 great grandchildren with 2 more on the way.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 13, at the Rexburg East Stake Center. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at Flamm Funeral Home in Rexburg, and Tuesday, from 10:00 to 10:45 at the stake center prior to services. Interment will be at the Sugar City Cemetery.
