Wilbur was a conductor for the N.Y N.H. & H.R. R. Co. [New York, New Haven, & Harlem River Railroad Co.], on their route between New York and Boston, when he registered for WWI. Wilbur recorded his wife, Mary Sturges Dixon, they were living on Third Street in Stamford at the time.

Wilbur's second wife was Augusta Scofield Rae. They were married and living in New Canaan by 1940.
