Philip Antes was born at Falkner Swamp, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania on August 26, 1759. After reaching early manhood he settled in what is now Dauphin county, and there married Susannah Williams, February 21, 1780. Through the influence of his father he was induced to remove to the mouth of Antes creek and settle at the mill which had been built by the former, and stood near Antes Fort. Not liking the location, he purchased a tract of land from Samuel Wallis, in Bald Eagle Valley (now Curtin's abandoned iron works) for which he was to pay "thirty shillings per acre, in four equal payments." This transaction took place May 3, 1787. He at once built a log house and removed there in July of the same year.
Philip Antes was an early convert to the doctrines of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and at his humble log house, at Curtins, the first society was formed in 1787.
In the course of time Philip Antes sold his improvement to Roland Curtin and located in Lawrence Township, Clearfield County, where his wife died May 2, 1826. He survived her till August 14, 1831, when he passed away in his 73d year.
