Born on Childers Mountain near Falkville, Alabama, the son of Andrew Weaver Childers and Delia (Nelson) Childers. His family moved to Arkansas in 1921. He married Miss Pauline Banton in 1932. He farmed in Cross County until 1951. He then moved his family to Rochelle, Illinois where he worked as a carpenter. In 1957, he started his own construction company. He built houses and churches until his retirement in 1972. He relocated in Wynne, Arkansas at that time and spent his final years fishing, hunting and preaching the gospel in local churches.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years; sons: James Dewey Childers, Giles Lynn "Guy" Childers, Don Childers; daughters: Barbara "Bobbie" Canter, Betty Holt; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son: Joe Edward Childers; two stillborn daughters.
