William worked at a variety of jobs, including a cooper and a watchman. He married Margaret about 1855. They had at least two children, Maria L. and Annie.
William enlisted from Richmond as a Private in Company "M", 4th U. S. Artillery on 10 August 1847, for service during the Mexican War. He was described at enlistment as 5' 7" tall, with brown eyes and a fair complexion. He was discharged at Fort Monroe on 21 August 1848, at the expiration of his enlistment term.
He enlisted again as a Private in Capt. Cabell's Company, Virginia Light Artillery (later designated Company "L", 1st Regiment, Virginia Artillery) on 25 April 1861. He was discharged by reason of being over age 35 (and therefore not subject to the Conscription Act), on 7 August 1862.
