Melvin Arlington Aikins, 91, of Edmond, Kiski Township, died Wednesday (June 18, 2003) at West Haven Nursing Home, Washington Township, after a brief stay.

He was born Feb. 14, 1912, in Shelocta.

Before retiring, he was a coal miner for Leechburg Mining, mainly working at the Brownstown Mine.

Mr. Aikins enjoyed the outdoors, camping and fishing. He also enjoyed traveling and walking beaches in Florida.

Survivors include his wife of more than 72 years, Grace Ream Aikins; a daughter, Mrs. Delores (Pete) Ukish of Kiski Township; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a brother, Russell (Rhoda) Aikins of Avonmore; and two sisters, Dorothy Ripple and Virginia Rupert, both of Vandergrift.

He was preceded in death by a son, Melvin "Pete" A. Aikins, in 2000; his parents, Lorenzo Arlington and Carrie Shaffer Aikins; two brothers, Vance and Roath Aikins; and a sister, Mildred Master.

Friends will be received from 7 to 9 tonight and from 10 a.m. Saturday until a service at noon in the KELLY L. CORRIDONI FUNERAL HOME, Avonmore. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Paul M. Reiner, pastor of Salina Bible Church. Burial will follow in West View Cemetery, Avonmore.
