Mathematician, literary critic, biographer, and historian. Archibald Henderson was from the old family from North Carolina. He was born at the family home, "Lombardy", where his grandmother home schooled him. He graduated from The University of North Carolina in 1898. He was a member of the Department of Mathematics at Chapel Hill. He received his doctorate in 1902, became a professor in 1908, became department head in 1920, and was appointed Kenan Professor in 1925. In 1915, he earned another Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. He was a writer on scientific topics. He was interested in Einstein's theory of relativity and wrote articles about it. While studying at Cambridge and the University of Berlin, he got to know Dr. Einstein. Many of his brief articles on scientific subjects were syndicated in Hearst newspapers. He became George Bernard Shaw's authorized biographer. On the ship that carried Henderson to England for his first meeting with Shaw, a fellow passenger was Mark Twain. The two men formed a friendship. Portraits of Henderson hang in the Chapel Hill and Rowan libraries, as well as in the Dialectic Society at Chapel Hill.
