Foster Calvin Carlton was born October 25, 1912, in Prim, Arkansas, to James Edward and Manda (Prince) Carlton. He died November 5, 2005, at the Baptist Medical Center in Heber Springs. Mr. Carlton was a member of the Prim Full Gospel Holiness Church. He was a farmer/rancher and lived all of his life in the Prim area. He was a Veteran of the Navy and served with three of his brothers at the same time in World War II. Although one brother was injured, all four made it home from the war alive.

Foster's Navy career began in April of 1944 on the U.S.S. Harshbushnell, a Merchant Marine cargo ship out of Charlestown South Carolina. The ship delivered supplies to fighting ships in enemy territory in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, the Red and Mediterranean seas, and the Persian Gulf. Foster served as a watchman and gunner for the ship. On the morning of March 20, 1945, off the coast of Murmask, Russia, a Nazi torpedo hit the ship and four merchant seamen in the engine room were killed. The surviving crew tried to make it to shore, but the ship started breaking apart and the seamen has to be rescued by a British destroyer. After a short stay in Murmask, Russia, the crew was shipped home to the states via Scotland. Foster was sent to Deland, Florida, for thirty days of rest and relaxation then to New Orleans, Louisiana, and Chicago, Illinois to finish out his duty. He was discharged in March of 1946.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of forty-six years, Essie Faye (Hipp) Carlton, three sisters, Edna Carlton, Eller Rimmer, and Bert Verser, three brothers; Claude Carlton, Fred Carlton, and Jasper Carlton, four infant siblings, and two grandsons; Ryan Foster Carlton, and Robbie LaNeal Carlton,

He is survived by one daughter and her husband Christine and Dallas Crabtree of Peculiar, Missouri, six sons and their wives; Randal and Francis Carlton, Harold and Maxine Carlton, Jimmy and Beverly Carlton, Bruce and Madelyn Carlton of Prim, Douglas and Janie Carlton of Heber Springs, and Dwight and Deanie Carlton of Buckner, Missouri, one sister Pearl Turney of Merced, California and one brother, Pat Carlton of Prim.

He is also survived by twenty grandchildren: Tammy Carlton, Karen Giles, Mickey Carlton, Kim Davis, Angie Holland, Russ Carlton, Shelly Baxter, Autumn Smith, Karla Clark, Robin Hill, Chuck Carlton, Shawn Crabtree, Mike Crabtree, Tonya Travers, Leon Carlton, Brandon Carlton, Scott Carlton, Brent Carlton, Nicholas Carlton, and Matthew Carlton. He is also survived by thirty-five great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be November 6, from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at the Prim Full Gospel Holiness Church in Prim. The Funeral will be Monday, November 7, at 2:00 with Bro. O.B. Carlton and Bro. Dennis Knapp officiating. Singers will be specialist from the church.
