HAGERSTOWN - Susan Rowe Gable, of Hagerstown, Maryland, died August 28, 2006 at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown, after an eight-year battle with colon cancer.
Born September 21, 1949, in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of the late Alma Rose Walker Rowe, father Joseph Newcomer Rowe and stepfather Harry Edward Swartzbaugh of Hagerstown.
Known primarily in the area as a professional pianist and theatrical accompanist, she also received her bachelor of fine arts from Moore College of Art in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1971 as a fashion illustration major. She worked as a freelance architectural illustrator and a theatrical set and costume designer in addition to her career as a private piano instructor and performer.
Since 1994, she was a private piano instructor at Saint James School in Saint James, Maryland. She taught privately at Machen Music from 1987 until 1998 and for the Cumberland Valley School of Music in the early '90's.
She was most recently known as a personal accompanist to Corey Evan Rotz of the Washington Opera in Washington, D.C. Together, Rotz and Gable presented a series of concerts and also produced "Keep the Music Playing,: a CD to benefit the renovation of the Capitol Theatre in Chambersburg, which is Rotz's hometown.
As a theatrical accompanist, she played hundreds of productions for tri-state area schools and community theater organizations since the early '70's. In 1971, she was co-founder of the area's first independent educational theater company for young people with North Country Players, Company II Theatre Workshop and Henry's Dinner Theatre. In 1991, she co-founded Escapade Theatre Company with colleagues William Morris and Katherine Groh Fitzsimmons. Escapade gradually grew to become home to Tres School for the Arts, where she served as administrative director until her retirement, due to illness in 1998.
She is survived by a daughter Erin Elizabeth Smith, son-in-law Thomas E. Smith II and grandson Thomas E. Smith III of Smithsburg, Maryland; son Jeffrey Scott Fignar of Hagerstown, Maryland, and grandson Sky Fignar of Whiteville, North Carolina; Hayden Joseph Ruck of Waynesboro; Drake Fignar of Hagerstown, Maryland; close friend and colleague Corey Evan Rotz. Survivors also include mother-in-law Lisa Jamison of Hot Springs, Arkansas, and LeeAnn Gable of Atlanta, Georgia; brothers-in-law Anthony Gable of Atlanta, Georgia, and Arthur Jamison of Hot Springs; and aunts Mildred Stambaugh of Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, and Martha Cerino of Philadelphia. She was preceded in death by husband Brian Shawn Gable of Hagerstwon in 2004 and first husband Jay John Fignar of Portland, Maine.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 30, 2006, from 6-8 p.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 31, 2006, at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of St. James School in Saint James, Maryland with Saint James Headmaster the Rev. Dr. D. Stuart Dunnan officianting.
Graveside services will be at the convenience of the family at Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.
