Sergeant William Glenn Brewer was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Army, SGT Brewer served our country until August 5th, 1968 in Tay Ninh, South Vietnam. He was 33 years old and was married. It was reported that William died from small arms fire or grenade. His body was recovered. SGT Brewer is on panel 49W, line 012 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for 16 years.
His last letter to his parents dated August 3rd said; Da Nang "very quiet...I'm going to try and rest a bit...might be bad tonight". His mom said her son was a dedicated Infantryman", always told me not to worry..he'd be alright". A member of the 22nd Battalion, 25th Infantry Division, Brewer was scheduled to receive promotion to Platoon sergeant on August 18th. This was his first tour in Vietnam and his first battle action, but he had previously had served in Korea on "stand by". He also had two tours of duty in Germany.
Staff Sergeant William Glenn Brewer, 33, a 16 year Army Veteran from Charlotte, was killed in action in Vietnam on Monday, it was learned here Saturday. According to information received by his parents, Mr and Mrs Clarence B Brewer of Route 9, Brewer was killed when his platoon was ambushed near Da Nang. Brewer was one of 152 GI's killed in action last week. Brewer, who had been in Vietnam not quite a month, had written his parents three weeks ago that his compound at Da Nang had been blown out from under them three hours after they arrived. He attended Charlotte local schools, completing his high school education in the service. In addition to his parents, Brewer is survived by a daughter, Sylvia Ruth Brewer of Clarksville, Tennessee; three sisters, Mrs Dave Goodwin and Mrs Bobby Pressley, both of Huntersville, and Mrs Roy E Purgeson of Heidleburg, Germany, and a brother, Clarence B Brewer Jr of Charlotte.
He is the Son of Mr Clarence Bryant Brewer and Mrs Artis Jane Little Brewer, Route 2, Box 289, Charlotte, NC 28208. He was the Husband of Mrs Brigetta Karen Jager Brewer, Father of Sylvia R. Brewer, 9501 Wyandotte Street, Kansas City, Missouri 64114; Sister to Mary Alice Brewer and the late Barbara Ann Brewer.
He served with Delta Company, 3rd Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment,"My God, Those are Regulars", 25th Infantry Division, "Tropic Lightning", USARV.
He was awarded The Combat Infantryman's Badge(CIB), The Bronze Star Medal, The Purple Heart Medal for his combat related wounds, The Korean Defense Medal with Devices, The Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal and The Good Conduct Medal(s).
