I know Sherman's headstone has a birth year of 1873 but it is very incorrect. His death certificate lists his exact date of birth and census information for Sherman supports that. He can be found aged 5 years old on the 1870 Henry Iowa census.
Sherman was what he went by all his life. In 1896 he was united in marriage to Martha Veal. They never had any biological children but around 1903 they took in an orphan, Earl Hugh Talbert and raised him as their own. Papers for official adoption were in the works, but when Martha died in 1912 it stopped. Earl sometimes went by Earl Strong anyway.
