MILITARY SERVICES FOR LT. RICH TO BE CONDUCTED AT JASONVILLE
Funeral arrangements for 2nd Lieut. Earl R. Rich, 26 years old, who was killed in action Oct. 29, 1943, were completed at Jasonville today.
The body of Lieut. Rich will arrive at Jasonville at 1:46 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, accompanied by military escort, and will be taken to the McClanahan Funeral home. It later will be removed to the home of a sister, Mrs. Leona Stiffler, in Jasonville.
Funeral services will be held at the Jasonville Christian church at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon, and burial will be made in the Lebanon cemetery. The Jasonville American Legion post will confer military honors.
Lieut. Rich was born July 4, 1917, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Earl Rich. he attended grade school at Midland.
He was attending Northwestern university at the time he enlisted in the Army Air Corps in March, 1942. He graduated Dec. 12, 1942 from the AAF advanced flying school at Williams Field, Ariz., and graduated from Davis-Monthan Field, Tucson, Ariz., on March 31, 1943, as a bombardier. He later was transferred to New Mexico, and in May, 1943 was sent to Lincoln, Neb., leaving the United States in July 1943 with the 43rd bombardment group, 64th Bomb squadron.
He was killed Oct. 29, 1943 over Rabaul, New Britain, while on a volunteer mission. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and the Air Medal for meritorious achievement, for participating in one hundred hours of operation flight missions in the Southwest Pacific area. These operations consisted of long-range bombing against enemy airdromes and attacks on enemy naval vessels and shipping. He was a lead bombardier.
He is survived by three brothers, Estel, Thomas and Wayne Rich, all of Jasonville, and four sisters, Mrs. Leona Stiffler and Mrs. Alice Pershing, both of Jasonville, and Mrs. Aziel Sinders and Mrs. Alene Haviland, both of Coal City.
