Jazz Musician, Composer. A pianist, he gained renown as part of the Woody Herman Band during the 1940s. He gained success in his own right in the 1950s, and notably accompanied saxophonist Stan Getz. In the 1970s and 1980s he transitioned to Broadway theatre and motion picture composing, arranging and orchestrating. His work with movie director Bob Fosse would see him win two Academy Awards, one for Best Music Supervisor for 1972's "Cabaret" and one for Best Music, Original Song Score and Its Adaptation or Best Adaptation Score for 1979's "All That Jazz". He continued working right up to the end of his life, and in 1999 won Tony Award for Best Orchestrations for the musical "Fosse". He passed away at age 79 in Los Angeles, California.
