Deceased Name: Dorothy Lea Dow Schauer
Dorothy Lea Dow Schauer, former wife of Senator William C. Schauer of Chaves County, a lifelong New Mexico resident and Roswellite, died August 30, at home in Rio Rancho. She was the daughter of Hiram M. Dow, prominent Roswell attorney and former Lt. Governor of New Mexico. Her mother was Ella Lee Dow, daughter of Captain Joseph Lea, one of the founders of the New Mexico Military Institute of Roswell. She is survived by her son, William Dow Schauer of Rio Rancho; her daughter, Mrs. Diana Lea Wingfield of Dallas; grandchildren, Mrs. Robin J. Moor and Mrs. Cheryl Lea Freiberg of Dallas; and her five great-grandchildren. Dorothy was an active horsewoman in the Pecos Valley and taught horsemanship most of her life. Dorothy was a contender to the Olympic Swim Team of 1936. She was a nurse stationed at Los Angeles General Hospital during World War II. Dottie was a self-taught artist and spent the past several years enjoying her gift. Memorial services will be held in Roswell, conducted by Ballard Funeral Home at St. Andrew Episcopal Church. Final interment will be at South Park Cemetery in Roswell. In lieu of flowers, donations made to the Notre Dame of Dallas School, 2018 Allen Street, Dallas, TX 75204; 214-720-3911, for the Disabled would be greatly appreciated.
