Robert D. Watson 89, of Avoca, died Tuesday, December 13, 2016 surrounded by his family in his home.

He was born September 20, 1927 in Port Huron, the son of the late William G. and Jennie Hill Watson.

He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army. He was stationed in Panama. After returning to the area, Bob participated in the Blue Water Area Baseball League and boxed in the Port Huron Golden Gloves Boxing Association.

His marriage to Marjory Armstrong was June 25, 1960 in Avoca. They resided in the house he built throughout their 56 years of marriage.

Bob retired from the Port Huron Area School District in 1986 after 37 years in education. He started his teaching career in the Allen School, which was a one room school located in Avoca. Prior to teaching in Port Huron, he also taught for Yale Public Schools. He helped hundreds of students in his illustrious teaching career.

Bob was a Life Member of Brockway Masonic Lodge #316. He was a 2x Past Master and was District 21A Mason of the Year in 1991. He was a founding member of the Kenockee Township Fire Department. Additionally, he served as the Kenockee Township Treasurer for ten years. His work in youth baseball in and around the Avoca area involved coaching, fund raising, and building baseball diamonds. He also coached softball at Fort Gratiot Intermediate School. Bob attended the Avoca United Methodist Church his entire life.

Bob was an avid hunter and a proud member of the NRA. He was a charter member of the St. Clair County Pheasants Forever Chapter. He enjoyed traveling, gardening, spending time with his family, and watching the Detroit Tigers. Many fond memories were made at the family cabin in Oscoda.

He is survived by his wife, Marjory, two sons, Bob (Barb) Watson and Scott (Carol) Watson, two grandchildren, Bobby and Brandi Watson, sister’s Janet Healy and Margaret Hart, and brother-in-law Wayne Bailey along with several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by sisters Helen (Don) Collins, Elsie (Lester) Glyshaw, Irene (Francis) Fuller, Eleanor (Emerson) Overholt, Ethel (Don) Mericle, Joyce Bailey, brother William C. (Donna) Watson, and brothers-in-law Raymond (Marge) Armstrong, Don (Helen) Armstrong, Jack Armstrong, and Thomas Healy.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 17, 2016 in Avoca United Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m. with visitation from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 15, 2016 in Smith Family Funeral Home – North from 6:00 p.m. till 8:00 p.m. and also on Friday, December 16, 2016 from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. There will be a Masonic Service at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, December 16, 2016 in Smith Family Funeral Home - North.
