Obituary

Jean Edwards Dickey, age 71, passed away unexpectedly at home in Oak Park, California on November 12, 2016.

Jean was born on April 12, 1945 in Wattsville, Wales to Thomas and Nancy Edwards. Her father, Tom Edwards was a Royal Air Force pilot whose bomber was shot down over Germany on November 4, 1944 and he and his crew perished. Jean had a loving mother and two sets of grandparents in her life and they all endeavored to give her a wonderful childhood. She moved to Brighton, England when her mother and stepfather married. She spent summer vacations in Wales with her grandparents.

Jean married Reginald Fowler and they had two children – Andrew and Melanie. Reginald Fowler, an engineer, moved the family to New York State in 1969 for better employment opportunities with Xerox Corporation. The family lived in Rochester, New York, then Dallas, Texas and eventually to Los Angeles. After Jean and her husband went their separate ways, she and the children moved back to England. After a year in England, Jean decided she wanted to live in California where the family moved in 1977.

Jean completed her formal education at State College of New York at Geneseo and spent 25 years in the insurance business.

Jean was a force to be reckoned with. She was intelligent, dynamic, independent and hilarious, with an infectious laugh that could fill a room. Her wit and compassion and her smarts were admired and attracted others to her quickly. Jean showed up for the people in her life. She had the ability to make others feel like they’d always known her. She was a loving and devoted wife, generous and supportive mum, a magnificent granny and was there for her family and friends. She loved animals, donating to the shelters and taking care of the wild creatures. Jean was courageous, brazen and bold. You always knew where you stood with her. She loved to cook, swim, hike, play board games, garden and travel and she did a lot of it. Jean was always up for an adventure! She impacted the lives she touched. She was especially unique and unforgettable. She will be deeply missed.

In 1987 Jean met her husband, Kenneth Dickey, and they married in 1994. When they retired in 2003 and 2005, they traveled the world on cruises, RV trips and driving trips in various European countries and traveling to organized sports games with grandchildren.

Jean is survived by her husband, Kenneth, her son Andrew Fowler (Julie) and grandson Liam Fowler of Worthing, East Sussex, England. She is survived by her daughter Melanie Janik-McAfee (Darrin McAfee) and grandsons Justin Janik and Shane McAfee. Jean also leaves behind Kenneth’s sons and daughters, Arthur (Franklin) Dickey (Ann O’Brien), Douglas Dickey (Shahbanu) of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Constance Rock (Jon ) of Redwood Valley, CA and Suzanne Rock; eight grandchildren – Alexander Kiris, Arianna Kiris, Zachary Rock-Zelazny, Angelica Rock-Zelazny, Malia Rock-Stierle, Aidan Rock-Stierle and Tristan Rock-Stierle and Azadeh Rose. She is also survived by her step-father, Roy Ambler and sister, Laura Evans, both of whom live in Worthing, East Sussex, England. Jean is also survived by her brothers-in-law, Everett Dickey (Freddie) of San Clemente, CA and Stanley Dickey (JoAnn) of Oklahoma City, OK and five nieces and their families.

Jean was predeceased by her mother Nancy Ambler and her father Thomas Edwards.

Jean expressed her desire that there be no formal memorial service or funeral for her; only that her ashes be committed to the sea in accordance with the United States Navy Burial At Sea Program. Should anyone desire to donate in her memory, animal welfare organizations are suggested for such donations.
