William spent most of his young manhood at Gory, Wexford, Ireland.
He later became an agent for Lord Courtown, one of the peers of the Emerald Isles, and for a number of years managed the nobleman's estate.
In 1873 his childhood friend Burchell had come to America and was working for the railroad and persuaded William to join him. At the age of 35, William set sail on the ship DARIEN, but was shipwrecked off the Bermuda.
From there he boarded the ship CITY OF LONDON, arriving in New York April 22, 1873.
