Son of Jeremiah and Elizabeth (Litsey) Layman, John Ward moved from his native Grayson Co., Kentucky to Pulaski Co., Missouri with his parents in 1859. When the Civil War started, John and brothers James Abner and William Henry were quick to enlist with the local Confederate regiment. Although wounded several times, all three brothers survived the Civil War and chose to remain in Pulaski Co. when their parents and younger siblings decided to move further south into Arkansas.

John married Amanda Lipscomb, daughter of Pulaski Co. pioneers Wade and Mary (Baker) Lipscomb on 25 January 1868.
John and Amanda became the parents of Jacob Franklin, twins Mary Ellen and Nancy Elizabeth, Charles, Louis, Wade, Walter Martin, Odas, and Dora. Amanda and youngest child Dora died of influenza as the family was traveling west in Oklahoma and were buried by the trail near present day Ardmore, Oklahoma. Eldest son Jake was among the family members that would return several years later in an attempt to return Amanda's remains to her native Pulaski Co., but family members were unable to locate her grave. John died in Pulaski Co. in 1916 and was buried in Antioch Cemetery.
