Sp4 William Sanford Butler, Vietnam Veteran, Native of Morganton, NC.

Specialist Four William Sanford Butler Jr was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Army Selective Service and a Draftee, SP4 Butler served our country until November 4th, 1966 in South Vietnam. He was 21 years old and was married. It was reported that William died from multiple fragmentation wounds from a mine. His body was recovered. SP4 Butler is on panel 12E, line 019 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for one year.

A 21 year old Burke County soldier died in Vietnam Friday from combat wounds. Sp4 William Sanford Butler Jr became Burke County's latest casualty of the fighting in South Vietnam, according to a Defense Department telegram received Saturday by his wife Mrs Phyllis Towery Butler of Route 4, Box 6T, Morganton. Mrs Towery who was a bride of four days when he entered the service over a year ago, was informed that her husband died at 1:30am Friday from wounds received October 31. His injuries involved the loss of both legs above the knee and the left arm below the elbow. Sp4 Butler was a son of Mrs Vadie Huffman Butler of Route 1, Connelly Springs, and the late William Sanford Butler Sr. He had been awarded the Purple Heart August 3 for earlier wounds suffered in combat. With the death message came no date for the return of the body here for burial, but that word is expected to be received soon. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Kirksey Funeral Home. Butler, who attended George Hildebrand School and was formerly employed by Drexel Furniture Company, was serving with an Infantry Task Force with the 25th Infantry Division.

Born in Burke County August 18, 1945, he entered the Military service September 2, 1965. He received his Basic Training at Fort Gordon, Georgia and was sent from there to Fort Ord, California. From there he went to Hawaii and then to Vietnam. On August 29, 1963 he married the former Phyllis Towery, who had been making her home just off NC 18, south of Morganton, near Randall's Hill. Surviving in addition to his wife and Mother are two brothers, Stiers Butler of Route 4, Morganton and Clyde Butler of Route 1, Connelly Springs; six sisters, Miss Gladys Butler of the home, Mrs Larry Ramsey, Mrs Fred Tweed, Ms. Margie Butler and Mrs Gene Guy, all of Route 1, Connelly Springs, Mrs Kelly Cline of Route 4, Morganton; and his maternal grandfather, Filo Huffman of Route 4, Morganton.

Every evening when he came home from work he would take his dog & go across the mountain hunting. He loved playing his guitar, fishing & hanging out with good friends-his sister. He is the son of the late Mr. William Sanford & Vadie Christine Huffman Butler of Route 1, Connelly Springs.

He was the husband of Mrs Phyllis Towery Butler, Route #4, Box 6T, Morganton, NC.

He served with Bravo Company, 14th Infantry Regiment, "Golden Dragons", 25th Infantry Division, "Tropic Lightning", USARV.

He was awarded The Combat Infantryman's Badge(CIB), The Purple Heart Medal for his combat related wounds, The Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal.
