Bessie May Killian Chandler Kendrick, age 99, of the Gilkey Community, passed away Thursday, December 22, 2016, at White Oak Manor Nursing Home in Rutherfordton, NC. May was born May 1, 1917 to the late Henry Killian and the late Bessie Cline Killian.

May lived in the Gilkey Community, attended Gilkey Elementary School and R-S Central High School. She retired from Rutherford Hospital Dietary Department and was active in the Gilkey United Methodist Church, Gilkey Ruritan Club, Widows and Widowers group for Gilkey and Union Mills, and the Gilkey School Community Center. May was well known for her cooking abilities and in years past assisted the Gilkey Ruritan Club with thier chicken pie suppers. Hobbies she enjoyed were reading, knitting, crocheting, growing African violets, and playing Rook, but in recent years failing eye sight(macular degeneration) prevented her from doing these things. White Oak Manor employees are the greatest people! From office staff, medical staff, dietary department, housekeeping staff, nurses and certified nursing assistants have been absolutely wonderful to take care of May. After spending a few days at Rutherford Hospital, May was very happy to get back to "her room" at White Oak, and back to "her girls". May had a great fondness for many of her care-givers, because they would talk to her about what was happening in the county and made her feel like family. She made many friends with other residents at the nursing home and enjoyed having other people to talk to.

She was first the widow of the late Leonard Chandler and then widow of Lewis Samuel Kendrick.

May was preceded in death by her son George Frank Chandler and his wife Shirley: two brothers; Pete Killian and John Killian, her sisters Bernice K. Griffith, Helen K. Champion, Virginia K. Koone, two grandsons; Steve Chandler and Pete Chandler and two step-sons; Parris Edward Kendrick and Samuel Bruce Kendrick.
