Mary Ann Sanyshyn Breatchel, age 94, went to her loving Lord, Jesus Christ, Tuesday December 20, 2016. Mary resided in Hilo, Hawaii until 2001 upon the death of her husband, WWII Veteran Captain Edmund (Lee) O. Breatchel. Since then, she resided at the Bath, NY Veterans facility. She was a WWII Veteran.

Mary was born June 13, 1923 in Caroline, NY to William and Pauline (Pulypchyk) Sanyshyn who emigrated from Ukraine. She is survived by sister Eva Sanyshyn Czebiniak of Johnson City, NY; nephew, Danny H. Breatchel of Newport Beach, CA; niece, Nancy Czebiniak Schermerhorn (Paul) of Painted Post, NY; Carol Gwardyak Wilkins (Wayne) of La Habra, CA who was raised by Mary from age 9 until adulthood. She also has several other nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews and great-grand nieces and great-grand nephews.

Mary was predeceased by her parents and brothers: Stephen, Frank, Metro and Michael Sanyshyn and sisters Anna Van Etten, Tessie Sorochinsky, Nancy Gwardyak and Helen Costa.

Growing up Mary worked on her parent's local farm in the Newark Valley area. After leaving home, Mary worked at IBM in Endicott, NY as a machine shop operator until 1944 when she enlisted in the Women's Army Corps, WAC, during WWII as a medical technician. Her first assignment was on officer's ward at Torney General Hospital, Palm Springs, CA. One of her patients was Captain Edmund (Lee) Breatchel who had been severely wounded during the Sicilian campaign. Two years later they again met at Letterman General Hospital, San Francisco. Edmund had been transferred there during his recovery and Mary, now promoted to Staff Sergeant, worked for WAC staff director.

They married on June 28, 1947 and resided several years in the Los Angeles and San Francisco, CA areas. Mary operated her own beauty salon. She also joined the Shaklee Corporation with husband Lee as some of the early pioneers in marketing and distributing their products. They grew their business nationally and were the first to expand their Shaklee business east of the Mississippi. Also in their early married years, they raised show dogs.

In the 1970's they decided to move to Hawaii and settled on the Big Island where they lived for close to 30 years. They loved the island life, and Mary loved gardening on the one-acre paradise she lived on. You could find her nurturing her tropical flowers, climbing papaya trees and gathering macadamia nuts.

Mary was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pahoa, Hawaii where she regularly participated in Mass and sang in the church choir. Mary and Lee were very active in the Disabled American Veterans organization on the Big Island. They also loved to travel the world mostly via Princess Cruise Lines.

Mary will be returning to her beloved Hawaii for full military honors, graveside service, and be buried next to her husband at the Hilo Veteran's Cemetery.
